Giving your baby “real food” for the first time can be quite daunting – especially if you’re a worrier like me! Of course the scare of choking is so very real, and making sure your baby gets that finely pureed dish is really important (at least it was to me!). So when I got the chance to try out the new Baby Brezza Glass One Step Baby Food Maker, I was very excited. This guy steams and blends your food all in one go (or you can only steam, or only blend depending on your need). It makes it SO EASY to make baby food at home – even for us lazy people (haha)!
There are tons of websites and books out there with great recipes for baby food, but conveniently there is also a small booklet of recipes included in the box with the Food Maker as well. Talk about an easy DIY! I decided to try out something simple with only two ingredients (but to be honest, they aren’t two things I would have thought to put together myself!): Sweet Potato and Apricot.
Literally the only thing I had to do for this recipe was buy the ingredients and chop up the sweet potato. Everything else was done for me by the Baby Brezza Glass One Step Baby Food Maker! There are definitely days I do not feel like cooking, but one can hardly argue that this is even cooking at all!! 😉 This particular recipe called for 2 medium sweet potatoes chopped into 1/4 inch cubes, and 4 dried apricots. I did adapt it a bit, only because I wanted to make sure that Mason actually liked it before I had too much puree on my hands, so I used 1 large potato and added an extra apricot for sweetness (he has a sweet “tooth” like his mama!).
Then you simply choose the amount of time you want to steam for (this recipe suggested 25 minutes), press the “steam and blend” button until it reaches the desired time (it counts up in 5 minute increments) and finally press “start!” The steaming process will begin automatically (make sure the water tank is filled before starting!) and upon finishing, will immediately blend for 30 seconds. You can also hold the “blend” button to continue blending should you want a finer puree.
Another important thing to have when you’re making your own baby food is good storage containers. Generally speaking, you will probably make enough of something that you won’t want to feed the same exact thing to your child every meal for several days in a row, so it is best to have something to freeze individual portions in. I love these Garden Fresh containers from Nuby: The Freezer Tray is essentially a deep ice cube tray, and comes with an air-tight lid to easily store in your freezer and simply pop out a “cube” to defrost for a meal. These Freezer Pots are ideal if you want to take it with you on the go rather than having to have another bowl handy. They are all microwave and dishwasher safe, so very easy to use & clean! I love these cute, colourful spoons too(can never have too many!).
I count it a success when cooking is easy, and the cleanup is relatively painless. Not to mention when the recipe is well-received! 😉 Thanks to Baby Brezza and Nuby (and my child’s palette) it was a win all-around. Would love to know where you find your favourite baby food recipes!
