As a lot of you know from following along with my #FitnessFridays on Instagram, I recently participated in a 6-week challenge with my gym, TFW Sauga. I joined the gym back in June because my husband Dave had been going for a while and really enjoyed it, and he wanted me to come and check it out. By the way, if you’re interested to check out some videos of what I’ve been working on during the challenge, be sure to check out the “Fitness” highlight on my Instagram!

Training For Warriors is a really unique gym that has franchised locations around the world. The Mississauga location is closest to Toronto, and now not a far drive from our new house at all! *win* I say the gym is unique because it is literally like no other gym I have tried before. I have never been able to stay consistent going to the gym on my own in the past, and the only time I WAS consistent it was because I was paying a ton of money to a personal trainer to help hold me accountable. Even then, my motivation for going was the amount of money I was paying, not that I actually wanted to be there.

TFW Sauga is an adult group fitness facility that incorporates personal, hands-on training into your membership. Classes are run Monday-Friday at 6am, 7am, 9am, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, and 8pm. Saturday and Sunday morning classes are also available to accommodates busy schedules. Monday/Wednesday/Friday are strength-training days, where Tuesday/Thursday are cardio-heavy days. I love that when I go to work out, I know I will never be on my own doing a workout – I will always be paired with at least 1-2 other people who are similar to me in terms of ability and we will do the workout together. This is extremely motivating for me! Coaches are always there to help answer questions about exercises or correct form as we complete the workout.

The owner Cory Fernandes, his partner Susie and the rest of the coaches do a phenomenal job at ensuring that members feel comfortable, welcomed, and motivated to hit their goals. When you first join, you get a preliminary assessment which measures your total weight, body fat percentage, and muscle mass, and some other body stats. This helps you to see what you need to work on specifically, and Cory will help you come to some goals for your health. He also makes himself available to meet in order to discuss nutrition or address any other questions or concerns you may have. Being part of TFW Sauga also allows you to be part of an online community through Facebook where members can talk to each other, and the coaches are able to address questions this way as well. Videos, helpful articles regarding fitness and nutrition, and many other things are also shared here. Realistically, it’s not just a gym, it’s a familia.

When I first joined the gym in June 2018, my weight was 110.3lbs with 49.6lbs of Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM) and 17.2% Body Fat. During the summer, I was not particularly concerned with watching my diet as much as trying out the gym and seeing if I liked the program (which I definitely did!). Since I enjoyed going and was going consistently, I decided to try the 6-week challenge which started in September 2018. At my weigh-in prior to starting the challenge at the end of August my weight was 115lbs with 52.0lbs SMM and 17.5% BF. So I had gone up in weight and slightly in body fat, but had also seen my muscle mass increase which was really exciting. My goals for the 6-week challenge were to get down to 15% BF and gain another 1.5-2lbs of SMM. I knew that in order to achieve that I would have been consistent in attending the gym, but also in eating enough protein and less fat and sugars.

The challenge divided all the participants into teams, and those teams held each other accountable for attending the gym and eating right. Doing certain things helped your team to achieve points, and the winning team wins prizes at the end of the challenge. Although my team didn’t win (we came in 3rd!) I was so pleased with my personal results, which were: 113.9lbs total weight with 53.6lbs SMM and 14.4% body fat! I achieved my goals (and then some!) and felt sooo much better about my overall health. I feel stronger, see more definition in my muscles, and see a lot less bloating due to diet. I know that I personally could not have attained my goals without the help of TFW Sauga and the amazing coaching team and community there. I am so excited to continue my fitness journey in 2019 with the start of another 6-week challenge in mid-January!

If you are from Mississauga, Brampton, Etobicoke, or Toronto and are interested in checking out TFW Sauga, you can contact Cory directly (cfernandes@ibeasttraining.com or via Instagram DM) and let him know I sent you over for a free 3-day trial! I would love to see you there 🙂

Sincerely,

Kristin xx
